Relocating and Moving to

Chattanooga, TN

Let's face it—moving is no walk in the park. Whether you're moving across the country or across the street, you'll probably face a few challenges along the way. That's why it's crucial to plan ahead and make your relocation as easy as possible! If you're feeling a little lost, I have some tips to get you started on the right foot. And if you ever have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out.

Before You Move

Organize and declutter

If you've lived in your home for a while, you probably have a lot of extra stuff that you might not need anymore. Set aside some time before you move to reorganize and declutter room by room. Creating piles for things you want to keep, donate, and throw away can help keep your belongings properly sorted.

Lighten the load

If you don't want to throw away all of your extra stuff, consider hosting a yard sale or donating your gently used items to local charities. If you live in the area, the Chattanooga Furniture Bank, Goodwill, and the Forgotten Child Fund are always accepting donations.

Change your address

It can take the local post office a few weeks to process your address change, so be sure to do it ahead of time. You won't miss any important bills, letters, or packages that are sent to your old home!

Handy Packing Tips

  • Reinforce: Make sure that all boxes are sturdy, and don't be afraid to use lots of bubble wrap!
  • Innovate: Get creative as you pack—try stacking items vertically or use blankets for extra padding.
  • Pack small: Put heavier items in smaller boxes so they're easier to carry, and don't overload a box.
  • Prevent scratches: Cover your furniture in cling wrap to prevent any damage during the move.
  • Prepare: Create an "Open Me First" box to take with you that has all of your daily essentials.
  • Label, label, label! Make your transition as smooth as possible by labelling and color-coding all boxes.

On Moving Day

Keep important information

Be sure to keep all personal documents—like birth certificates and passports—with you or in a safe place. Prescriptions, valuables, and first-aid supplies should stay off the moving truck, too.

Take an overnight bag

If you make it to your new home before the moving truck or plan on staying in a hotel, don't forget to pack an overnight back with all of your essentials. You don't want to forget a change of clothes, toiletries, or a phone charger!

Have phone numbers handy

Keep your moving or rental truck company's phone number on hand in case you have any questions. If you have a contract from the company, make sure it's easily accessible.

After You Move

Clean first

It's easier to clean a house that doesn't have any furniture in it! Before you start unpacking, be sure to scrub every inch of your new place. And if you're feeling too tired, there's no harm in hiring a professional cleaning service.

Unpack by room

Instead of unpacking everything at once, try working room by room to make the process more manageable. Start with the most important rooms—like your kitchen and bedrooms—and then move on to the less necessary spaces.

Enjoy your new home

It's easy to get caught up in the chaos of moving, but that doesn't mean you can't take a few moments to unwind. Don't forget to relax a bit and take in your new surroundings—your new adventure is just beginning.
